There are many powertrain options available to those consumers who are thinking about opening up their wallets to purchase a new Cadillac CT6 luxury sedan.

For those people who value good fuel economy, there’s a turbocharged four-cylinder that provides efficiency of up to 31 mpg on the highway and there’s also a 335-horsepower naturally-aspirated V6 available that provides a sportier performance. However, for those gearheads in need of the most power possible, Cadillac offers a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that pumps out 404 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

Adding to those powertrain options, Cadillac will be launching a plug-in hybrid version of the CT6 that will boast an all-electric range of at least 31 miles. The Cadillac CT6 PHEV will become available next year in the US, but the story of how its battery will be produced is quite intricate.

General Motors will build the CT6’s battery pack at the Brownstown Battery Assembly Plant in Michigan and then ship it to China, which is the location where every 2017 Cadillac CT6 PHEV will be assembled. This may sound strange, but by building the battery in the states and then shipping it overseas for final assembly, GM will be eligible for special incentives for building green cars within China’s borders.

While some critics have condemned Cadillac’s decision to produce the CT6 PHEV is China and then export it to other countries, the luxury automaker has defended its decision by saying it doesn’t expect overwhelming demand for CT6 PHEV. However, if demand does increase, battery packs could start being produced in China. That news was first reported by AutoBlog, which heard of the potential production switch when its staff recently toured the Brownstown Battery Assembly Plant.

The Cadillac CT6 PHEV is scheduled to become available in China this fall.
