Here’s a question: when is 640 horsepower, 630 lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of 200 mph not good enough? The rumored answer is when your name is Cadillac and you’re concerned that rivals BMW and Mercedes might have something in the works even more powerful than the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V Sedan.

Equipped with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine, which can also be found in the Corvette Z06, the 2016 CTS-V is capable of rocketing from 0 to 60 mph in a ridiculously fast 3.7 seconds, but Automobile Magazine has reported inside sources told its publication, “The Cold War continues; I don’t know where it stops, but it’s not at 640 hp, that’s for sure.”

The Cold War being referenced probably is alluding to the Cadillac CTS-V’s competition with both the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG; both of which produce more than 555 horsepower. Cadillac is reportedly concerned the 2017 versions of both those German vehicles could approach its current levels of performance and would like to put more distance between it and the European luxury brands.

Automobile Magazine speculated that because of its magnetic ride control and responsive chassis design, the CTS-V could handle even more horsepower with the right fine tuning, which could push the CTS-V’s performance numbers closer to the 707 horsepower produced by both the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat.
