If you want a lot of cars to choose from plus a discounted sales price, you need to head to dealerships in autumn. According to CNBC Writer Mack Hogan, fall is the ideal time to find a new ride that fits your wants and needs, as well as your budget constraints.

With new models rolling into the dealerships, their older counterparts will be substantially discounted, notes Hogan. Citing TrueCar data, U.S. News & World Report writer John M. Vincent reports that car shopping in fall is particularly beneficial if you’re in the market for a pickup truck, especially a full-size model. Of course, waiting until December could afford you more impressive discounts than what are available in fall. The one caveat is that the car you really, really want might not be around during that time.

As we get closer to the end of the year, dealerships will be under mounting pressure to showcase 2019 models and move their older generations, reports Hogan, who adds that the cars that haven’t sold by December will earn the highest price reductions or discounts. December’s discounted inventory might make your budget happy, but you might end up settling, because there just won’t be as many cars to consider.

When it comes to the right time to car shop, you’ll have to determine what’s more important to you — your budget or your preferences.
