It’s all part of the “van”

If you noticed fewer kids ringing your doorbell for candy this past Halloween, then you are not alone. In many areas of the country, traditional trick-or-treating is taking a backseat to trunk-or-treating events.

Said events involve members of the community handing out candy from the trunks of their vehicles in a parking lot or other centralized location, mainly so children don’t have to travel door to door or cross busy streets in order to collect sweets. Oftentimes, the vehicles at these trunk-or-treat events are decked out in costumes of their own.

Cars.com recently got into the spooky spirit of Halloween, decorating one of its vehicles for the October holiday. For Halloween 2017, the team at Cars.com transformed a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica into the Clown Prince of Crime himself, the Joker.

Specifically, Cars.com drew inspiration from Heath Ledger’s famous rendition of the Joker for their car-based costume. The Dark Knight was primarily filmed in Chicago, the same city that Cars.com is based out of.

Indeed, Cars.com actually took the clown-inspired minivan out for a spin, taking photos of it at iconic locations from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Locations included the Windy City’s South LaSalle Street and Lower Wacker Drive.

In order to put a smile on the Pacifica’s face, Cars.com first applied white vinyl to the front hood of the Pacifica, adding black vinyl around the headlights and red vinyl for the Joker’s sinister smile. Green strings of construction paper hung off the roof of the vehicle to serve as the Joker’s hair, while a purple tarp hung over the sides, sporting the villain’s chilling mantra: “Why so serious?”

Besides doing so to have a bit of spirited fun, Cars.com also designed the costume for the Pacifica to raise awareness for local trunk-or-treat events and Halloween safety while out on the road. According to collaboration between Sperling’s BestPlaces and State Farm, from 1990 to 2010, child pedestrian fatalities more than doubled on Halloween when compared to the rest of the year.

If you’re already looking to create a spooky Halloween costume for your vehicle at next year’s trunk-or-treat event, Cars.com has presented an ideal example for you to work off of. It just might not be the best idea if any of the neighborhood kids have a big problem with clowns.
