Celebrating Five Years of the Toyota Green Initiative
Ever heard of the Toyota Green Initiative? If not, allow us to enlighten you. Launched in 2009, the Toyota Green Initiative partners each year with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs), and aims to educate and enlighten students—as well as alumni and the communities surrounding the colleges—on the benefits of sustainable living. Sounds right up Toyota’s alley, doesn’t it?
“Our commitment to environmental progress extends throughout HBCU campuses” said Jim Colon, VP of African-American Business Strategy for Toyota Motor Sales, Inc. “Recently, 16 of 22 partner schools, were recognized for adopting sustainable practices, from campus recycling programs to LEED Certification. We are proud to provide resources that help further their sustainability practices.”
This year, the Toyota Green Initiative will attend the State Farm Magic City Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, and will partner with Alabama Power Company, the City of Birmingham, and the Birmingham Business Alliance. The four will present a series of events designed to empower Birmingham residents to live cleaner and more sustainable lifestyles. Events will include Electronics Recycling Day, a panel discussion between local sustainability experts, and a lunch with college students to help them learn about the various green career paths available to them.
In addition to the events put on during the State Farm Magic City Classic, Toyota will hold a joint presentation of leased Priuses (Prii?) to 22 Southwest Athletic Conference and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association schools, including local rivals Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University.
Here’s to five years of the Toyota Green Initiative, and hopefully many more to come!
