Check out the World’s Fastest VW Beetle
We all know that the VW Beetle is a zippy little vehicle, but have you really had the opportunity to see this car race along as fast as it can? Volkswagen wanted to put the Beetle LSR to the test, so it was taken out to the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, and what happened was truly magnificent. The car attempted what is called a “flying mile” and recorded a speed of 205.122 mph, which is the fastest speed for a VW Beetle ever recorded.

To be fair, we’re not saying that the VW Beetle in your driveway will be able to achieve speeds that fast. The Beetle LSR’s powertrain was modified by THR Manufacturing to help the vehicle run faster and still follow Southern California Timing Association G/BGS rules. Loaded with new pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, turbochargers, and head modifications, the modified Beetle achieved 543 horsepower and 421 lb-ft of torque. Beyond the modifications under the hood, the suspension was lowered, and it was given the special tires needed to traverse the terrain of the salt flats. There was also an extensive system of safety gear installed for the driver.
“We are completely thrilled with the Beetle LSR’s performance at Bonneville,” said Dr. Hendrik Muth, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “The Beetle is not the most aerodynamic car in our portfolio, so running 205 mph is a testament to the power that can be made from the EA888 TSI four-cylinder engine. This feat truly underscores the sporty and pugnacious spirit of the Beetle.”

If you’re thinking about buying a Beetle for yourself, the stock Beetle R-Line achieves 201 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque with its EA888 Turbocharged and direct-injection 20.-liter TSI engine. It sounds like a fun ride for sure.
