Camaro 50th Anniversary 1967 Chevy Camaro to 2017 Camaro

Fifty years ago today, GM publicly revealed the Camaro name, with some Chevrolet managers defining the word as “a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.” To commemorate five decades of Mustang-munching, Chevy today announced plans to celebrate the Camaro’s 50th anniversary this summer during the Woodward Dream Cruise.

The commemorative activities will include tours of the Lansing Grand River plant where the Camaro is produced on August 18th, “Camaros and Coffee” in Detroit on August 19th, and a special Camaro heritage display at the Woodward Dream Cruise on August 20th.

Chevrolet’s display at the Woodward Dream Cruise will feature rare and milestone examples from each of the iconic muscle car’s six generations, including the new 2017 Camaro ZL1 and 1LE models.

Chevy has also released a new video highlighting the Camaro’s history:

“Over the past half-century, the Camaro has fostered enthusiasm, camaraderie and memories like few other vehicles,” said Chevy Marketing Director Steve Majoros. “It’s a passion Chevrolet takes seriously and the activities this summer are a way of giving back to those who have made the Camaro an icon.”

The Camaro 50th Anniversary Celebration begins on August 18th, when Chevrolet will host Camaro owners and enthusiasts at the downtown Lansing Grand River facility, with a car show, heritage display, discussions with Camaro team members, and 45-minute tours of the plant offered from 7am to 3:30pm.

“This is an unprecedented opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at building the Camaro from the ground up,” said Camaro marketing manager Todd Christensen. “Whether you’re a Camaro owner or simply a fan, it’s an event you won’t want to miss.”

Then on Friday, August 19th, Chevy will host a Camaros and Coffee event at the Joe Louis Arena Riverfront parking lot in downtown Detroit. Later that morning, 50th Anniversary edition Camaros will lead the Camaro Rally participants on the Woodward Dream Cruise.
