The hatchback is certainly making a comeback. Almost every major manufacturer has one of these five-door offerings, and the vehicles range from the budget-conscious Chevrolet Spark to luxury cars from brands like BMW and Lexus. This month, GM officially confirmed that the hatchback version of the Chevrolet Cruze will be making its way to the United States from Europe and China very soon.

Hatchbacks have been a staple of European car markets for years, as their configurations make it easy to carry more gear or larger items without having to buy a bigger sport utility vehicle. As gas prices rose, so did the demand for versatile, yet fuel efficient, vehicles on this side of the pond. Gas prices have started to fall back down, but the love for five-door cars, also known as fastbacks, has remained.

GM North America CFO John Stapleton announced the American Cruze hatchback at the Citi 2015 Industrials Conference, according to The Detroit News. It had been rumored that the car would appear in America after it was reportedly in Las Vegas for a meeting of GM dealers.
