Chevy's VR experience will give auto show guests a behind-the-scenes look at the testing its vehicles undergo

Auto show attendants can now enter the virtual world

Guests who are able to attend the various auto shows that are held throughout the year get an up-close look at the latest vehicles that automakers have to offer. Yet, those same attendants rarely ever get a glimpse into the testing that these vehicles undertake.

Chevrolet is aiming to change that at this year’s North American International Auto Show with the Chevrolet Virtual Dynamics Lab 4-D experience.

The Chevrolet Virtual Dynamics Lab 4-D interactive exhibit virtually places visitors in the passenger seat various Chevrolet vehicles. It just so happens that those vehicles are undergoing some of the most rigorous tests at GM’s Milford Proving Ground in Michigan.

As participants situate themselves in the specialized 4D theater and place the virtual reality headsets over their eyes, they will get a 360-degree look at the testing grounds and various courses that are located at GM’s Milford location. Meanwhile, the 4D theater will allow them to feel every twist and turn the virtual vehicle encounters during the testing period.

Vehicles tested at the Milford Proving Ground undergo conditions simulating climates varying form -40 degrees to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, altitudes ranging from -700 to 12,500 feet, and wind speeds of up to 100 mph. These simulated conditions ensure that Chevy’s vehicles are ready to encounter nearly any environment on Earth.

You can see those environments replicated virtually in the video below:

“Chevrolet is committed to delivering high-quality, durable vehicles able to withstand some of the harshest weather conditions and most unique driving situations people encounter today,” explains Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet. “With this new Chevrolet Virtual Dynamics Lab experience, we are offering consumers the opportunity to be immersed in our rigorous testing processes and to better understand the capability built into our lineup of vehicles.”

Guests under the age of 18 must be 48 inches or taller to enjoy this virtual experience. For everyone else, the Chevrolet Virtual Dynamics Lab 4-D will be available during normal auto show hours between January 20 and January 28.
