Chevrolet Racing Won 11 Championships in 2014
Team Chevrolet race drivers who won championships, significant races and events, or were rookies of the year this season are recognized during a special event Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at the General Motors Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan. 2014 is rapidly drawing to a close, and Chevrolet wants to take a moment to remind you that it had a really, really good year in racing. Between NASCAR, IndyCar, NHRA, United SportsCar Championship, and Pirelli World Challenge, Chevrolet Racing won 11 championships in 2014, including five manufacturer titles and six driver championships.
“Eleven championships mark one of our most successful racing seasons,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “Winning races and championships on the track helps us develop better cars and powertrains for the showroom.”
He’s a man of few words, that Jim. To be totally fair, 11 titles kind of speak for themselves.
Team Chevy NHRA Pro Stock Drivers Champion Erica Enders-Stevens
To recap: Chevrolet Racing’s largest achievement arguably came last month when Kevin Harvick won the season’s final race at Homestead-Miami to hoist the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship title. In so doing, Harvick helped solidify Chevy’s status as a 12-time winner of the NASCAR Manufacturer Cup.
In the Nationwide Series, 18-year-old wunderkind Chase Elliot won the series championship in the No. 9 Camaro, making him the youngest NASCAR national champion ever and pushing the Camaro to its first Manufacturer Cup in Nationwide competition.
In IndyCar, Will Power took his first-ever driver’s championship with three wins and 15 top-10 finishes and helped nab Chevrolet yet another manufacturer title. In NHRA Pro Stock, Erica Enders-Stevens made history as the first female Pro Stock championship winner and Chevrolet earned its 20th NHRA manufacturer title.
Bruno Massel won the NHRA Stock Eliminator class at the US Nationals, Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi won three races to earn the Prototype drivers’ championship—and the Prototype manufacturer title for Chevy—in IMSA/TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, and Lawson Aschenbach won four races in the Camaro SS to take the Pirelli GTS class drivers’ championship.
Not a bad year for Chevrolet Racing, to be sure. It should be exciting to see what they have in mind for an encore in 2015.
