Chevrolet Sales Increase 6.2 Percent During the Second Quarter of 2018
Sales were strong for the pickup truck and SUV segments of Chevrolet's lineup during the past three months, while sedan sales were rather mixed
It’s been quite some time since we last received concrete sales figures for any of the GM brands. General Motors recently switched to quarterly sales reports, rather than the monthly sales reports published by most of the automotive industry.
With that said, June marked the end of the year’s second quarter, so we now have an idea of how each of GM’s automotive brands are doing in regards to sales so far this year. As it turns out, Chevrolet’s sales are doing just fine.
In fact, sales for Chevrolet were up by 6.2 percent during the second quarter.
Chevrolet sold a total of 528,100 vehicles during the second quarter of the year. For comparison, the Chevy brand only sold 497,159 vehicles during the second quarter of 2017.
Combined with the year’s first quarter, Chevrolet has already reached 1,019,019 sales at the halfway point of 2018. This accounts for a year-to-date sales growth of 5.2 percent.
As was the case during the first quarter of 2018, some of Chevrolet’s largest sales growth was found within the pickup truck segment. For example, Chevrolet Colorado sales were up by 46.8 percent, with a total of 41,016 Colorado units sold.
Meanwhile, Silverado sales are also up prior to the official release of its 2019 model. During the year’s second quarter, Chevrolet sold 155,529 Silverado vehicles.
On the other hand, Chevrolet’s sedans experienced sales losses for the most part. Nevertheless, there were a handful of passenger cars that experienced surprising sales growth.
Impala sales were up by 46.3 percent in the second quarter. Meanwhile, sales for the Chevrolet Spark increased by 115.4 percent, with a total of 4,454 Sparks sold.
Still, sales for the Cruze plummeted during the past three months. Cruze sales fell by 26.2 percent to 37,836 units, meaning the Malibu is once again outselling its smaller sedan counterpart.
Things aren’t looking so great for the Malibu either. Sales for the sedan were down by 13.6 percent during the year’s second quarter.
All the while, Chevy’s SUVs continue to dominate. Chevrolet Traverse sales were up by a sold 30 percent, with a total of 35,892 units sold.
Outside of the Silverado, the Chevrolet Equinox was easily Chevy’s best-selling vehicle. Equinox sales totaled 73,967 units during the second quarter.
So far this year, the Chevy Colorado has experienced the highest sales increases with a growth rate of 38.9 percent. At the same time, the Chevrolet Sonic has lost the most sales, with a decline of 41.2 percent.
