Those who like the look of the current Chevy Silverado are in luck

This past weekend, Chevrolet gave automotive enthusiasts their first official look at the redesigned 2019 Chevrolet Silverado during a special event celebrating 100 years of Chevrolet trucks. As with any automotive reveal, there are sure to be a few people who are not big fans of the Silverado’s new look.

For them, Chevrolet is reportedly offering another option, as the current generation of Chevrolet Silverados will be sold under the “Silverado Legacy” nameplate starting in 2019.

A Long-Standing Legacy: History of Chevrolet

The information reportedly comes from GM’s Vehicle Identification Number decoder document for the 2019 model year. The document was full of surprises, but perhaps the biggest one was Chevrolet’s continuation of the current Silverado generation.

Of course, those who want to stick with the current Silverado model should be prepared to have their options limited. The Silverado Legacy model will reportedly come in only three trims, with one extended cab body style and one 5.3-liter V8 engine option.

The Sierra equivalent of the Chevrolet Silverado Legacy is bit more blunt with its nameplate: the Sierra Limited. GMC’s Silverado Legacy counterpart is offered with the same engine and body style as the Chevy model, only offering two trim levels instead of three.

While the next generation of Silverado and Sierra pickup trucks will be built in Flint, Michigan and Fort Wayne, Indiana plants, the Silverado Legacy will be built exclusively in Oshawa, Ontario.

Looking Ahead: GM in 2018

The Silverado Legacy and Sierra Limited models are designed to turn a sizable profit for GM, as they will come at no additional cost to develop, unlike their brand-new counterparts. GM is undoubtedly hoping that a second Silverado option will help the Silverado’s sales experience major increases in 2019, as Silverado sales have somewhat stagnated for the current sales year.

The reports do not indicate whether the Silverado Legacy or Sierra Limited will be available past the 2019 model year. In the meantime, Silverado fanatics now have an extended chance to purchase the Silverado’s current generation before it is eventually replaced by the brand-new 2019 Silverado design.
