Despite a recent redesign for the subcompact Spark, the model is supposedly set to be replaced by an upcoming crossover vehicle

The once lively Chevy Spark might be getting ready to fade away

Various reports released last week sounded the death knell for the Chevrolet Sonic and Chevrolet Impala, which are allegedly set to be discontinued by Chevy as early as this year. Receiving a refreshed look and updates alongside the Chevrolet Cruze and Malibu, it seemed as though the Chevrolet Spark would escape an untimely demise.

Now, it’s being reported that the Spark’s future may not be too bright. GM’s South Korean unit declared that it may discontinue the Spark relatively soon.

Looking Forward For General Motors: GM in 2018

As of right now, the plan is to reportedly replace the Chevrolet Spark with a new crossover vehicle. This crossover would enter production around 2022.

Of course, the possibility of this new crossover entering the automotive market is currently dependent on the future of GM’s South Korean operations as a whole. Earlier this year, GM announced its intentions to shut down one of its South Korean factories, a decision that has resulted in tension between GM’s South Korean branch and the company as a whole.

Despite a recent refreshed look for the Spark, the model’s chances of a future look slim

Chevrolet sold a total of 22,589 Spark vehicles in the U.S. last year. Compared to the Spark’s sales performance during 2016, this resulted in a 36% sales decline for the subcompact model.

Additionally, GM’s decision to sell its Opel brand to PSA last year could further hurt prospects of a future for the Spark. A good portion of the Spark’s overall sales worldwide originated from the Opel Karl, an exported version of the mini-car under the Opel badge.

How Far Chevy Has Come: History of Chevrolet

Due to the tumultuous environment surrounding GM’s operations in Korea at the moment, it’s hard to say what lies ahead for the Chevy Spark, or even if its supposed crossover-based replacement ever comes to fruition. Nevertheless, all signs point toward the Spark’s recent redesign as being its last.
