General Motors Korea reported domestic sales totaling 10,004 vehicles and exports totaling 31,307 vehicles in August, bringing total sales for the month to 41,311 vehicles. Domestic sales fell 21.7% year-over-year, but the automaker noted the uptick in sales for the Chevrolet Trax and Chevrolet Malibu as bright spots.

“The core products such as Trax and Malibu led overall sales in the tough season of the year through positive market response with enhanced product competitiveness,” said Dale Sullivan, GM Korea Vice President of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. “We will continue to improve product lineups based on precise market analysis while executing marketing activities that re-emphasize the value of one million sales of Chevrolet products.”

Trax sales totaled 1,365 vehicles, nearly double the Trax’s sales total from August 2016. This also pushed cumulative sales of the Trax to 1,108,626 vehicles—1,052,049 exported and 56,577 sold domestically—making it the most highly-sold vehicle in GM Korea’s history for such a short amount of time.

Malibu sales totaled 2,474 vehicles, up 5.4% year-over-year.

August was also a significant month for GM Korea in that it named Kaher Kazem its choice to replace James Kim as President and CEO. Kazem’s appointment to the position took effect on August 31st.

“I am excited to lead GM Korea,” said Kazem. “I will work closely with our team and business partners to turn around GM Korea’s financial performance and ensure the sustainability of our business. Chevrolet is a strong brand in Korea. I look forward to building on its success and continuing to put our customers in Korea at the center of everything we do.”

GM Korea’s sales through August total 361,716 vehicles—93,513 vehicles sold domestically and 268,203 sold in export markets.
