Chevy Announces 2014 COPO Camaro Program Ahead of SEMA 2013
The Chevy Camaro has long been an icon of American performance, but the COPO Camaro elevates the legend to entirely new level. Chevrolet has finally released the details of the 2014 COPO Camaro program, which factory-produces supercharged Camaros designed specifically for racing on drag strips.
The COPO Camaro program enters its third year in 2014, and just like the two years before it, Chevrolet will only produce 69 race cars for the NHRA Stock Eliminator and Super Stock competition. That figure is likely a tribute to the 1969 Central Office Production Order (COPO) produced Camaros, which were among the fastest ever built. One such Camaro ZL1, one of only 69 made, sold at auction for $500,000.
Each 2014 COPO Camaro will flaunt redesigned front and rear fascias and will be available with the driver’s choice between a 27-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) V8 or a 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) V8; each of which is equipped with a 2.9-liter, screw-type Whipple supercharger.
“The COPO is helping sportsman racers around the country put the Chevrolet bowtie in the winner’s circle and the 2014 cars will be even more competitive with the new engines,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports, in a press release. “But the only way to get one of the new race cars is get your name on the COPO mailing list at chevroletperformance.com.”
The first 2014 COPO Camaro produced, which will also be the only model painted Ice Blue Metallic, will be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson’s annual January event in Scottsdale, Arizona with proceeds benefiting the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans. The 2014 COPO Camaro will debut at the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show.
