Chevy Bolt Production Might Kick Off in October 2016

When we got our first look at the Chevy Bolt EV Concept at the Detroit Auto Show, the understanding from the jump was that it was a precursor to a production model that would have a 200-mile all-electric range and be offered for a price around $30,000. Another tacit understanding was that this production-version Bolt would compete with the Tesla Model X and would likely share its 2017 release date.
If a new report from Reuters is of any merit, the Bolt might not just compete with the Model X, but it will likely beat it to market altogether.

General Motors Co plans to begin building the Chevrolet Bolt, its all-new $30,000 electric car, in October 2016 at an underused small-car plant north of Detroit, two supplier sources said.
GM’s production target for the Bolt is about 25,000 to 30,000 cars a year, the sources said.
The Bolt will be assembled, along with a companion model for GM’s Opel subsidiary in Europe, at the Orion Township plant, the sources said.
As is noted by GM Authority¸ the Orion Township plant is currently responsible for the Chevy Sonic, indicating that the Bolt may well eventually become the Sonic EV. The projected maximum annual output of 25,000 to 30,000 units suggests that Chevrolet has respectable sales ambitions for the eventual product.
