Chevy Chooses Dario Franchitti to Pace Indy 500
Chevy has given three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, Dario Franchitti, the green light to pace the 98th Indianapolis 500 on May 25. Known to the racing world as the third driver to ever win at least three consecutive IndyCar titles, Franchitti will be sliding into the driver’s seat of a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 to kick off the race, representing the 25th time a Chevrolet has been a pace car for the Indy 500 since 1967.
“It is a tremendous honor for me to be asked to drive the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500,” said Franchitti. “As a historian of motorsport and as a three-time winner of this great race, I will appreciate every minute of getting to pace the field in the new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. Although I won’t be competing in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, this will be as close as one person can get to the action. I can’t wait until May in Indianapolis.”
The 2014 Camaro Z/28 is one in a long line of Chevrolet vehicles to hit the asphalt at the Indy 500, the first of which was in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s inaugural race in 1911, making Dario’s trip around the turns another big moment for the American carmaker.
