Today Chevrolet announced yet another addition to the ever-expanding lineup of special edition Silverado pickup trucks; the Silverado High Desert package, which will arrive at dealerships sometime this fall.

Based on the concept shown at the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the High Desert package will be available on LT, LTZ, and High Country trims, combining refined exterior styling with an all-new lockable and water-resistant cargo system. Magnetic Ride Control suspension will also be available on High Country models.

“The High Desert package blends the capability and utility of Silverado with the refinement and luxury of Suburban,” said Chevy truck marketing director Sandor Piszar. “It’s ideal for those customers who want both the security of a lockable cargo area, as well as the flexibility of a pickup truck bed.”

The new flexible, lockable storage system installs over the roll-formed, high-strength steel bed to add a three-piece hard tonneau cover and dual side storage bins. The cargo divider inside can be raised up to secure smaller items or lowered to maximize space and access the full length of the bed floor. Cargo can be secured at the touch of a button, by using the keyfob to lock the tailgate.

The High Desert package comes with 20-inch wheels and all-season tires on LT models, while LTZ and High Country models feature 22-inch wheels with all-terrain tires.

The Chevy Silverado High Desert will also become the first Silverado to offer Magnetic Ride Control suspension, which uses sensors to constantly “read” the road, and respond by triggering damping changes in electronically controlled shock absorbers in as little as five milliseconds.

LTZ and High Country models offer the Silverado’s 420-horsepower EcoTec3 6.2-liter V8, the most powerful engine offered in a light-duty truck. The motor is mated to the new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission.

Other special edition Silverado models include the camouflaged Realtree Edition, the race-inspired Rally Edition, and the pitch-black Midnight Edition.
