Chevy Sonic Only American-Made Car on 10 Best Back-to-School Cars List
Kelley Blue Book recently released a list of the 10 best cars for students who are about to head back to school. Mindful of the rising costs of college tuition/light beer prices, KBB has let “practicality and affordability lead the way on this annual list.” All of the cars selected start at less than $20,000, which should hopefully leave students with some remaining ramen noodle funds.
The only American-made car featured on the list was the 2014 Chevy Sonic, which is assembled at the GM Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan.

Placing it at number seven in their ranking, KBB wrote that “The well-rounded Sonic is one of the most fun-to-drive and most comfortable subcompact cars out there. Available in sedan and hatchback flavors, the Sonic was also one of the first cars to offer next-level iPhone integration via Siri Eyes Free. As a bonus, it’s also the most affordable car on this list.”
The Sonic, which is available in sedan or hatchback, received a KBB.com consumer rating of 8.5 out of 10. It has a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 138 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.
Steve Majoros, the director of Chevrolet Car Marketing, said in a statement, “Chevrolet prides itself on offering something for everyone, no matter which road of life they are on. The Sonic is perfect for students, offering easy-to-use technology and connectivity as well as safety, versatility, and economy in a stylish package.”
