The 2017 Chevy Bolt EV, General Motors’ 200-mile range all-electric car, has already entered pre-production. GM teased the development by releasing a video which shows the very first Bolt being sent down an assembly line at the automaker’s plant in Orion, Michigan.

“For us, this shows movement,” Chevrolet spokeswoman Michelle Malcho told Fortune magazine. “We’re not just talking about it, we’re doing it.”

And the company is doing it rather quickly, at that. The original Bolt concept debuted at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show in January of that year, and the 2017 production model debuted at CES almost exactly one year later. Now the vehicle has entered pre-production, and is anticipated to hit dealerships later this year.

That’s pretty fast, and one suspects that the speedy pace is being dictated, in part, by Elon Musk. The Tesla CEO has promised that his company will release its first mass-market vehicle, the $30,000 Model 3, this year, and Chevrolet is trying to beat it to the market.

The Bolt EV will carry a price tag of $37,500, but after federal tax credits and incentives, should be able to compete with the Model 3’s $30,000 price.

Malcho said it typically takes between six and 12 months for a vehicle to go from pre-production to production. The 2017 Chevy Bolt EV, obviously, is once again looking to be on the faster end of that spectrum, as it continues to race to the market.
