Chevrolet and NNPA sponsor DTU/NNPA Fellowship at Howard University

Back in March, Chevy partnered with the National Newspaper Publishers Association to help create a new fellowship program for students of Howard University’s School of Communications. Called “Discover the Unexpected,” the program matched journalism students from the Historically Black College with newspapers in Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, and Washington DC.

Today Chevy provided us with a #DiscoverTheUnexpected video update, in which we see some of the students in DC and Detroit getting the chance to meet with two African-American trailblazers from the worlds of pop culture and sports.

In the first section, DTU fellows Sidnee Tyler King and Tatyana Hopkins go to the Vault of Midnight comic book shop in Detroit to meet legendary illustrator Arvell Jones.

Jones worked for both Marvel and DC Comics, drawing many popular superheroes such as Thor and Iron Man, but also helping to create early black comic book characters such as Misty Knight. In their interview with him, Jones told Sidnee and Tatyana about how his commitment to diversity informed his comics.

Meanwhile, in Washington DC, fellows Victoria Janise Jones and Rushawn Walters interviewed minority youth hockey coach Neal Henderson for a piece in the Washington Informer. As the founder and head coach of Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club, Henderson shepherds an almost entirely African-American team in a sport that is primarily white.

Henderson spoke about his passion for helping underpriviledged youth, as well as his history as a professional hockey player during the racially turbulent 1960s.
