GAC is currently helping Fiat Chrysler build the Jeep Renegade for Chinese consumers and the carmaker wants Fiat Chrysler to help it get a foothold in the American market

Fiat Chrysler is possibly helping a new carmaker come to America. The Italian-American carmaker is currently working with Chinese carmaker Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (GAC) in China to produce Chinese-made Fiat Chrysler vehicles—and it looks like GAC wants Fiat Chrysler to return the favor.

GAC Motor (a subsidiary of Guangzhou Auto) recently declared its intentions to sell vehicles in the US market by next year. If it does so, the carmaker will become the first Chinese brand sold to American consumers.

“Chrysler’s development in China required our support,” said GAC Motor General Manager Wu Song. “Now for GAC Motor’s development in the US, we also hope for Chrysler’s support and help.”

There was no discussion as to the type of support Fiat Chrysler might offer the Chinese carmaker. Currently, Guangzhou Auto is the sixth-largest carmaker in China and produces vehicles in joint ventures with Fiat Chrysler, Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., and Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

In order to start sales in the United States, GAC Motor still needs to have discussions with potential dealership partners in the US and begin road tests. These steps are the biggest to overcome as a start-up carmaker in America. According to Wu, the GAC Motor company already has two models that meet US standards.
