Chrysler Ignition Switch Issue Deepens
While no one can likely top GM’s performance in the area of ignition switch recalls, Chrysler is gunning for a close second. The automaker is planning to recall several older-model SUVs (number not yet determined) due to ignition switch performance, though no injuries have been reported (just one accident and a few complaints). Chrysler Group engineers are currently developing a fix for the issue.
Affected models will include Jeep Commanders from the 2006 – 2007 model years, as well as Jeep Grand Cherokees from the 2005 – 2007 model years. Reportedly, a driver’s knee may bump the ignition key from the “on” position, causing the engine to stall, reducing brake power, complicating steering, and possibly disabling frontal airbags.
Chrysler Group plans to identify customers affected by the recall and reach out to them by mid-September. While an exact number of affected models has not yet been made clear, an approximate amount of 792,300 was established, with 649,900 of those in the United States.
Chrysler Group is also recalling around 21,000 vehicles (14,300 in the U.S.) to inspect shocks and/or struts. They will be replaced if necessary. No related injuries, accidents, or complaints have been reported.
Models affected include 2014 Ram 1500s, 2015 Jeep Cherokees, and 2015 Chrysler 200s that were assembled during a short 16-day period that ended on June 6, 2014.
All costs related to these issues will be borne by Chrysler Group.
