Motor CitizensYesterday, Chrysler Group LLC launched “Motor Citizens,” which is the new name for a volunteer program that has already been well-established within the company. “Motor Citizens” will give Chrysler’s salaried employees, who number more than 18,000, 18 hours paid time off every year to go out and volunteer for nonprofit organizations that they are passionate about, or volunteer at company-sponsored initiatives.

One of those company-sponsored initiatives was held yesterday at the company’s Auburn Hills campus, when 260 employees prepared 70,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now. Using an assembly line process, the employees prepped 7,000 pounds of rice, 2,900 pounds of soy, and 350 pounds of veggies with a seasoning mix (that includes 21 essential vitamins and minerals), combining them into small meal packages. These packages will be shipped to Brazil, where students can enjoy them at school; some will also be used in crisis relief.

“As a company, we are committed to making service to others part of our daily mission,” explained Jody Trapasso, Senior Vice President, External Affairs, Chrysler Group LLC, yesterday.  “Over the years, we’ve invested more than half a billion dollars in charitable organizations to help build strong communities, while our volunteer activities have impacted millions of lives. Wherever possible, we will put volunteer hours behind our grants to better drive social change. Today’s event to help alleviate hunger demonstrates the enthusiasm and commitment that Chrysler employees bring to serving our communities.”

It wasn’t just the American employees that got their volunteering on yesterday. Canadian employees worked with a food program at the Downtown Mission of Windsor and Mexican employees prepared food in conjunction with the Solo por Ayudar Foundation.

Over the last 60 years, the Chrysler Foundation has donated over half a billion dollars to organizations and causes across the globe. Now, the Foundation has established the Motor Citizens grant. This $500 grant will be given to any U.S. nonprofit at which a team of 10 or more employees contribute a total of 30 hours of service.

“We have created new tools, including the Motor Citizens volunteer website, to better meet the needs of our employee volunteers and our non-profit partners who are driving social change,” said Trapasso. “The Chrysler Motor Citizens volunteer program goes beyond the walls of our offices to help build strong communities both here at home and around the world.”

Chrysler Group is also working with its dealerships, which are known for their community involvement. The company even launched its own internal marketing campaign that is geared to encourage employees to volunteer.
