Classic Chevy Coupe Once Covered in Rust has Now Visited Every US State

A couple from Kansas has rebuilt a '39 Chevy coupe and have driven it to car shows in all 50 states

When Kendall and Sherma Phelps first started rebuilding their ’39 Chevy Coupe, it was filled with rat poop and covered in rust, but on September 17th they were able to accomplish an amazing feat of driving the vehicle in every US state.

The Chevy has logged 95,000 miles, and the couple has created a blanket out of car show t-shirts they have collected from each state. They have dedicated the special blanket to the memory of a family member who lost his fight with cancer.

The couple said it took a year-and-a-half to finish rebuilding the classic Chevrolet.

The 1939 Chevy Coupe originally came with a 3.5-liter six-cylinder cast iron engine, which was capable of producing 85 horsepower. Surprisingly, the 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe sold for approximately $680 to $850, based on the special features that could be incorporated.

The Phelps recently visited Iowa for a class reunion, but made sure to visit a car show in Davenport while they were in the state. The couple said they have made countless memories together during their 50 state adventure in the ’39 Chevy.

“I have good memories and some bad memories. I got to spend the night in, ahh…I’m not supposed to say that,” Kendall Phelps told WQAD 8. “A police officer talked to me one night and told me I shouldn’t be over here doing what I’m doing.”

After that remark, the couple looked at each other and shared a laugh.
