Closer Looks at the 2019 Hyundai Veloster & Veloster N [PHOTOS & SPECS]

Those keeping tabs on the NAIAS this week in Detroit will be surprised by what Hyundai is showcasing. Instead of the brand’s typical eco-friendly, family-oriented image, Hyundai promoting a new reputation for street and track performance in the forms of the redesigned 2019 Veloster and brand-new Veloster N.

Seven years after Hyundai debuted the Veloster at NAIAS, the automaker unveiled the second generation of the Veloster. In an attempt to reach new customers it hadn’t attracted before and establish a consumer interest in its asymmetrical sports hatchback, Hyundai has also released the first entry in its new N performance line. Here’s a closer look at both models.

As in previous years, the 2019 Veloster will come in two primary forms, based on its engine options: standard and Turbo, both of which have received enhancements.

The basic Veloster carries a Nu 2.0-liter four-cylinder Aktinson-cycle engine with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing and either a six-speed manual or a six-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission.  Estimated performance potential is around 147 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and maximum torque of 132 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm.

The Turbo engine is a 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder that boosts output to 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,500-4,500 rpm (according to estimates). Transmission options include the same six-speed manual as the standard Veloster or an exciting seven-speed dual clutch transmission that benefits from  SHIFTRONIC® gear control.

Both versions offer three drive modes can tweak performance and handling to suit driver preferences.

Hyundai Veloster N Pics and Performance Specs

The powertrain on the brand-new Veloster N lives up to the mission of the automaker’s new N sub-brand: producing high-performance versions of your favorite Hyundai vehicles.

The Veloster N’s powertrain is charged by a 2.0-liter, direct-injected turbocharged that exceeds the one on the Veloster Turbo, both in size and capability, boasting  275 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (estimated) and up to 260 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,450-4,700 rpm (estimated). close-ratio, short-throw six-speed manual transmission with downshift rev-matching capability.

If you’re interested in all the nitty-gritty, here’s the rundown:

  • 9:5:1 engine compression ratio
  • electronically-controlled suspension
  • carbon-coated synchro rings and gear material reinforcement on the transmission
  • double-layer facing clutch disc design
  • multi-mode, high-flow active sport exhaust system
  • 13.0-inch front/11.8-inch rear brake rotors, upgrade-able to 13.6-inch/12.4-inch
  • tight turning with N Corner-Carving Limited-slip Differential and N Power Sense Axle design
