40 Millionth Corolla soldToyota launched the “Era of the Family Car” in 1966 with the production of the first Corolla in Japan.  In the forty-seven years since, the Corolla has evolved over eleven generations and solidified itself as the best-selling nameplate in automotive history by surpassing forty million global sales.

An interview with Toyota Chief Engineer Shinichi Yasui explores the Corolla’s legacy as a car capable of bringing “happiness and well-being to people around the world.”  In 1966, production of the Corolla was around 20,000 a month in a single Japanese plant.  Today, more than 1.1 million Corollas are produced globally each year.

Toyota has created a vehicle heritage webpage chronicling the various generations and incarnations of the Corolla over the last forty-seven years, all the way up to the all-new eleventh generation 2014 Corolla.   With a greater emphasis on performance and exhilaration, there is no shortage of reasons to consider getting behind the wheel of the newest Corolla iteration.

In Toyota’s commemorative press release, Toyota VP of Marketing Jack Hollis said, “Always the poster-child for Toyota’s legendary quality, the Corolla is all-new for 2014 with expressive styling, a premium interior, and terrific driving dynamics. It’s built for the way we live today and the places we go. From urban chic to family road trip, at 40 million we’re just getting started!”
