Could GM’s New Deputy General Counsel Help Lead GM/FCA Merger?

Yesterday, General Motors announced that Jill Sutton would take up the mantle of Corporate Secretary and Deputy General Counsel for Corporate, Finance, and Strategic Transactions. Interestingly, her previous employment history leads some to believe that she will help facilitate the merger between GM and FCA. Because, yes, people still think this is a thing that’s going to happen.

Prior to taking the position with GM, Sutton was the vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Tim Hortons, Inc., which eventually merged with Burger King under the banner of Restaurant Brands International Inc. That her direct supervisor, GM’s executive vice president and general counsel Craig Glidden, pointed to her role in “significant corporate transactions” in praising her worthiness for the role leads some to believe that she is being brought in for the express purpose of helping make the long-rumored merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and General Motors a reality.
However, the latest word with regards to the merger that only one man seems to want is that the one man who seems to want it—FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne—has decided that he’s not as interested these days, according to The New York Times.
