Couple Renovates Old School Bus into Tiny House on Wheels
Based out of Wilmington, North Carolina, couple Luke and Rachel decided to give up their 1,500-square-foot house and restore an old school bus to live life on the road.
The school bus has been converted into a 220-square-foot home, with a renovation price tag around $30,000. Their home is entirely solar-powered, allowing them to travel the country, completely off the grid, along with their 2-year-old daughter.
At the beginning of the renovation process, Luke put his welding skills to the test and decided to raise the roof an additional 20 inches for a more open feeling inside the bus. They also equipped the school-bus-turned-home with some beautiful interior touches, including a gas stove and a wood-burning fireplace.

Luke and Rachel put emphasis on utility when redesigning the bus. They didn’t want to have to unfold a dining room table every time they wanted to use it, so they made it fit within the space without needing to be put away. It has the ability to fold up, but for everyday use, it stays out without cramping the space.
The bus can sleep up to four adults and one child, with a fold-out bed in the living room, one in the master bedroom, and a small crib-sized bed off the back bedroom. There is also a full bathroom with a shower, tub, sink, and composting toilet.
The home Luke and Rachel have created out of this redesigned school bus offers a welcoming, at-home feel for the couple and all of their visitors. It has beautiful, hand-crafted touches like wooden paneling and a wide-open feel with its large windows and raised ceiling. Their home is beautiful, wherever it happens to be.
