The 2014 Honda CR-V is the best-selling SUV in America

Today, coinciding with conference call wherein John Mendel reassured the world that Honda will not do “stupid things” that will benefit the company in the short term and ultimately hurt the customer and the industry in the long term, Honda released some information regarding retail sales through the first half of 2014. This information reaffirms that the Accord is the most popular retail car in America, and that the CR-V is still the best-selling SUV overall for the past 10 years.

“More individual customers put a new Honda Accord in their driveway in the first half of this year than any other new car in America, and SUV buyers continue to choose CR-V more than any other SUV in America,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. “While competitors rely on deep-discounts and sales to corporate and rental fleets, Honda continues to achieve steady and sustainable growth based on the quality and value of our products in the hands of individual customers.”

American Honda’s Executive VP of Sales John Mendel told Automotive News today that Honda is staying consistent with its long term goals and will not take unnecessary risks in the present to make up for short term losses. Further, the company intends to ensure that their retail customers remained satisfied with their offerings; the success of the Accord, Civic, and CR-V would suggest that they are succeeding to that end.

According to retail sales figures that exclude full-size pickup trucks, the Accord, Civic, and CR-V rank first, third, and fourth, respectively. Of course, bringing fleet sales and pickup truck sales paints a considerably different picture of Honda’s position, but the success of the three aforementioned vehicles—as well as the Civic and Odyssey—cannot be denied when it comes to appeal with the individual.

The true champion for Honda, it seems, is the CR-V, which currently holds the outright title of best-selling SUV in America and has remained at the top of the SUV heap for a decade.

Honda estimates that the Accord, Civic, and CR-V will all reach sales totals in excess of 300,000 by year’s end. Whether this will include fleet sales or not remains to be seen.
