Today marks the tenth anniversary of Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s tragic fatal accident in the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. In a newly released Silverado ad, his son, NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt Jr., talks about his father’s memory and his family’s multi-generational connection to the Chevrolet brand.

“As much as I think my dad was the best racecar driver ever, my dad felt the same way about his father,” Junior says, referring to his grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt, who had a brief racing career in the 1950’s that included 51 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races over the course of six years.

“My grandfather raced Chevrolets; my dad raced Chevrolets; we drove Chevrolets to get to the racetrack,” Earnhardt says in the video. He also reminisces about his first racecar (a ’78 Chevy), and how he pined for a Silverado when he turned 16 years old.

In addition to honoring the Earnhardt legacy, the new commercial emphasizes the fact that “one of the most revered names in NASCAR trusts the most winning name in NASCAR.” Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he trusts Chevy engines both on the track and off the road, whether he’s inside his SS stock car or his Silverado 1500.
