Datsun Brings Home Gold At the Concours d’Elegance of Texas
When you hear the words “Concours d’Elegance” you think of beautiful classic cars from the best luxury brands. However, when you think of Texas, images of trucks and wild terrain comes to mind instead. Those two things came together in Arlington, Texas, this month at the Concours d’Elegance of Texas, and a classic Datsun rolled away as the class winner in the Truck Category.
The Datsun that won the truck category wasn’t just any truck. This particular vehicle, named Sweat Pea, is a 1971 Datsun 1600 pickup truck in a shade of light green, and has been part of Nissan’s Heritage Collection for a little over a year. It was bought by Marvin Askew of Nashville in 1971 and was driven by him for 42 years. Not only did he drive it, he also maintained it so well that it was in pristine condition when he sold it to a collector in 2014.
According to Nissan, it is not common for classic car shows to have a truck category, so the automaker made a point to enter its truck in the competition. Nissan even went so far as to become a premier sponsor of the event, which is in its sixth year. Sweet Pea was accompanied by its caretakers Dave Bishop and Jeremy Stillwell to the Lone Star State to join the competition with 125 other vehicles from around the country.
We are so happy that this little Datsun beat out more traditional American trucks to bring home the grand prize. Hopefully Mr. Askew is proud of how his hard work on this truck paid off on a national stage.
