David Hockney BMW Art Car Returns for Paris Photo Los Angeles
The David Hockney BMW Art Car
To celebrate the second edition of Paris Photo at the Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, BMW has brought along with it an old favorite: the David Hockney BMW Art Car. Created in 1995, Hockney’s 850CSi features his unique depiction of the car’s interior and its occupants on the exterior paneling—including the body of a driver at the steering column and their pooch standing against the back seat.
“It would be good to perhaps show the car so you could be looking inside it,” BMW’s press release quotes Hockney as saying. Hockney, a native Brit, moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and subsequently became one of the foremost artists of the decade known as “The Swinging Sixties.” His impact on the LA art scene is a significant reason for the David Hockey BMW Art Car to return for the second Paris Photo Los Angeles art fair.

Since 1975, BMW has taken the idea of cars as art a step by asking prominent artists throughout the world to use a variety of BMW cars to make an artistic statement. These BMW Art Car designs reflect cultural and historical development of not only art, but also design and technology.

Along with Hockeny, the BMW Art Car Collection includes works from well-known artists such as Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Jenny Holzer, and Jeff Koons.
In addition to displaying the David Hockney BMW Art Car, the automaker will also be bringing the new i8 to Paris Photo Los Angeles. This marks the 11th year of partnership between Paris Photo and BMW.
