If you watched TV during the holiday yesterday, you likely saw one of Chevy’s newest commercials featuring patriotically colored vehicles. The commercial starts with an upbeat Chevy sales person standing next to a trio of the brand’s SUVs—the 2018 Trax, Equinox, and Traverse—which just happen to be in shades of blue, red, and white (to represent ‘Murica, of course). The sales person interacts with a few new couples, both celebrating the novelty of their relationships while encouraging them to think about purchasing a vehicle that will suit their needs both now and in the future.

The Chevy sales person strikes small talk with each couple, inquiring how long they’ve known each other. Each couple twitterpatedly relays how long they’ve been together, mile markers that range form less than a month to two months.

The sales person quickly proceeds to show off each of the three Chevy SUVs, emphasizing the potential future scenarios that would necessitate purchasing each size of vehicle. The Trax is a concise compact that’s perfect for a young couple that’s decided to move in together, as the sales person relates. The couples smile and laugh off their slight embarrassment at the prematurely proposed situation.

The sales person then introduces the 2018 Equinox, which is the next size up for a compact SUV. “Perfect for when you two have your first kid,” he comments. More laughter ensues from the couples.

Lastly, the sales person presents the Traverse, the most spacious of the trio. He expresses it as the perfect vehicle for the next phase of the couple’s pursuit of the American Dream, “For when you have your five kids, two dogs, and one cat.” The couples emit embarrassment and a bit of cynical guffawing at this even more ambitious scenario.

Despite the dialogue’s adherence to conventional relationships and cliche American couple life trajectories, no one can deny that these three Chevy SUVs are accommodating to young couples and/or those who have or will soon be having children.
