The spacecrafts featured in works of science fiction often have names with important meanings behind them. The USS Enterprise of Star Trek fame is named after a number of historic U.S. naval vessels, the SSV Normandy from the Mass Effect series is named after the famous campaign from WWII, and Star-Lord, leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, named his ship the Milano after his childhood crush: Alyssa Milano.

With the God of Thunder and Avenger alum Thor heading out to space in his latest movie, Thor: Ragnarok, he will undoubtedly need to rely upon such spacecrafts to navigate the stars. So what will these ships be named after?

According to director Taika Waititi, Holden vehicles.

Waititi, a resident of New Zealand, employed a number of methods to make himself and his crew feel more at ease while working on a big budget motion picture project. Since much of the cast and crew hail from Australia, New Zealand, and the surrounding Pacific islands, one way was to add references and Easter Eggs that they would be familiar with.

So, when the time came to name the vehicles that would be featured in the film, Waititi looked toward the Australian automotive industry, namely the Holden brand. The director borrowed the Kingswood, Torana, Statesmen, and Commodore names for the spacecrafts that appear during the movie.

Thor: Ragnarok sees the eponymous superhero stranded on a gladiatorial world after his hammer, Mjolnir, is destroyed by the goddess of death, Hela, portrayed by Cate Blanchett. To save the realm of Asgard, Thor will have to team up with allies like the Hulk and former enemies like his mischievous brother Loki.

With the last Holden car rolling off the GM assembly plant in Elizabeth, Australia, today, it will be nice to see some heartfelt references to the oft-forgotten Australian automotive scene when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters in two weeks.
