In a stunning turn of events, Dodge announced on Monday that it would be slashing its Viper price by $15,000 grand over the outgoing 2014 model. This move made the all-new Viper priced competitively with the original Viper from the early 90s, when adjusted for inflation.

But now GM Authority is posing an interesting question. Could Dodge have dropped its Viper price because of the upcoming 2015 Corvette Z06? The 2015 Corvette Z06 will be offered at a starting price of $78,995, while the Viper, even after its $15,000 reduction, will begin at $84,995. The TA and GTS variants of the Viper will retail for $100,995 and $107,995 respectively. Questionably, the fairly large price reduction for the Viper was announced just weeks after GM announced the pricing of the Z06.

The Viper is by no means an exact competitor for the Corvette. The Viper is more of a limited run car with a much lower sales volume, though Dodge does want to reach 2,000 Vipers a year going forward, a seemingly impossible goal as Dodge had only sold 438 in the first two thirds of this year.

Of course, it is more likely that Dodge had already considered reducing the price of the Viper to hit that goal, but by $15,000? Maybe, but maybe not. It is quite possible that the Dodge execs had considered a substantial price reduction but only settled on the final cost once the Z06 pricing had been released.
