2016 Dodge Viper ACR

As part of its 2016 Best Driver’s Car competition, Motor Trend brought its top 12 cars of the year to Laguna Seca for a lap time showdown. Almost every car in the lineup is a proper supercar, with ridiculous amounts of power or technology under the hood—or both. The price tag for these cars averages around $148,000, with some asking more than $200,000 for the right to own them.

Only two of the cars don’t approach supercar territory: the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro, though this is only in terms of price. Fans of both nameplates will be happy to note that they did more than just hang with the big boys—they totally outvalued them in some cases.

However, the clear winner of the lap time competition was none other than the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, which set a time of 1:31.58, beating the next-fastest car by a whopping 2.65 seconds while costing $66,860 less.

In fact, the Viper ACR was among the cheapest of the bunch. At $131,990, it was the fourth most affordable car of the lot despite being in a completely different league of its own in terms of performance. Just check out the table below:

Rank Model Lap time Price
1 2016 Dodge Viper ACR 1:31.58 $131,990
2 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus 1:34.23 $198,850
3 2016 McLaren 570S 1:34.58 $219,770
4 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S 1:35.30 $169,450
5 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R 1:36.11 $66,990
6 2017 Acura NSX 1:36.36 $197,400
7 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera S 1:36.44 $140,465
8 2017 Nissan GT-R 1:37.08 $112,585
9 2016 BMW M4 GTS 1:37.66 $135,195
10 2017 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE 1:37.78 $45,700
11 2017 Jaguar F-Type SVR 1:38.75 $147,945
12 2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S 1:41.77 $211,910

Compare It: The slightly slower but more affordable non-ACR 2017 Dodge Viper

It was always going to be fast, though. The Viper ACR has been to Laguna Seca before, where it beat the famed Porsche 918 with a record lap time of 1:28.65, albeit with an Extreme Aero package. Even without the latter, its Motor Trend lap time put it within 1.69 seconds of the Porsche, which means that despite costing less than the average car in the 2016 Best Driver’s Car competition, its performance is more akin to that of the $845,000 hybrid hypercar.

Motor Trend will choose its overall winner tomorrow. It may not be the Viper ACR, because the “best driver’s car” isn’t necessarily the fastest one around a race track, but it ought to give the Dodge some major points. In any case, if you don’t have the money to afford a McLaren or a Porsche or an Audi supercar and chasing lap times is your priority, you know where to turn to.
