Dogs May Be Better at Safely Navigating City Streets than People
As most dog lovers suspected, dogs might be smarter than people after all.
Driving in the city is stressful 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Traffic congestion is through the roof — especially with the rise in Uber and Lyft services — but cars aren’t the only thing you have to worry about in the city.
Pedestrians have the right of way, it’s true. Most of us were told that if you answer that question incorrectly, it’s an immediate fail on your driver’s test. But just because pedestrians have the right of way doesn’t mean they’re always right. City dwellers are often in a hurry; they jaywalk, cross when the light says to wait, and do whatever is necessary to get to their destination on time.
As a result, approximately 70,000 pedestrians were injured in 2015, with 5,376 deaths. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one pedestrian is injured every 7.5 minutes, with one death every 1.6 hours.
This dog, on the other hand, knows how to navigate the city safely — following the traffic laws better than humans.
In the video above, you can see the dog waiting patiently at the crosswalk. Other pedestrians ignore the “Do Not Walk” signal on the other side of the street, dodging traffic to make their way to the other side. The dog not only sits patiently until the light signals he may cross, but the dog even looks both ways to make sure traffic has come to a complete stop before stepping out into the road.
