Driver Hits Police Car While Playing Pokémon Go

It may seem a no-brainer that playing Pokémon Go while driving is a bad idea—and by “bad” we mean unsafe for you and everyone around you.

Still, the urge to find a Vaporeon or a Zapdos (good luck with that) is apparently too strong to overcome for some. It’s not the first accident we’ve seen caused by reckless Pokémon Go-ing, but this is certainly among the ones that must have caused the quickest feeling of regret—especially when the driver got out of his Toyota RAV4 to find out that the vehicle he’d hit was none other than a police patrol car. Woops.

The incident took place at around 3:30 am on Monday in Southeast Baltimore, Maryland. Three officers were chatting on the sidewalk (probably exchanging Pokémon-catching strategies) when the RAV4 came down the street and sideswiped their car, almost knocking it into them.

At least the driver had the good conscience to stop immediately. One of the officers went over to check on him and his passengers, at which point the driver came out of the car and took all responsibility, saying “that’s what I get for playing this dumb ass game” and admitting that he had been looking down at his phone when contact took place.

Last week, a 28-year-old man crashed into a tree and destroyed his car while playing the game, and a 15 year-old girl broke her collarbone and foot as she wandered in the middle of a busy freeway to try to catch a Pokémon.

We’ll once again warn people not to use their phone and drive at the same time, but at this point those who need to hear it the most are probably too busy playing Pokémon Go to listen.
