Dubai is now offering free parking and toll-road passage for drivers of electric vehicles. The city’s efforts arrive in the context of current Middle Eastern efforts to reduce a reliance on petroleum fuel and increase the use of more eco-friendly resources. Dubai is the second largest facet of the United Arab Emirates sheikhdoms, housing approximately 6% of the globe’s crude oil supply.

Not only is Dubai encouraging EV technology, to help minimize the city’s carbon footprint, but it has also invested the equivalence of $327 million to construct a solar plant.

Another key plan that Dubai is leveraging involves the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). This entity has installed 100 charging stations up to date and is set to install 100 more before 2017 is over.

Al Tayer, chief executive officer at DEWA, articulates the company’s short-term plan: “As an incentive, DEWA’s registered users will be able to have their electric vehicles charged by DEWA’s Green Charger electric vehicle charging stations, completely free until the end of 2019.”

DEWA also revealed its environmentally-conscious long-term goals; it hopes to have 32,000 electric cars on the road by 2020 and a total of 42,000 by 2030.

With such exciting policy changes and added funding, Dubai is poised to help catalyze more efficient technology and processes in the country as a whole.
