2014 NASCAR Sonoma RacewayCarl Edwards picked up his second win of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season and, more importantly, his first road racing victory on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway. In order to get there, Edwards had to endure grueling heat and stave off one of his childhood idols.

Sonoma RacewayEdwards took the lead from Marcus Ambrose in Lap 86 and held off a surging Jeff Gordon to take his 23rd career win and ostensibly guaranteeing himself a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Despite the excitement that accompanies a playoff spot-clinching win and his first road racing victory, Edwards was beside himself about the man he beat by .591 seconds to achieve it.

“That’s a moment I’ll never forget, to be standing in victory lane and to have held off Jeff Gordon with all of the success he’s had here and in our sport,” Edwards said. “It’s just really, really special. I’m living proof that right here that whatever it is you’re doing just keep doing it and don’t ever give up because somehow things can work out. I’m just very fortunate.

“I’m glad there wasn’t one or two more laps in the race because I don’t know if it would have worked out that way, but it definitely meant a lot to have Jeff Gordon in my mirror,” Edwards added.Sonoma Raceway

Sunday’s victory marked the 135th for team owner Jack Roush.

Sprint Cup action will resume Saturday with the Quaker State 400 Presented by Advance Auto Parts from Kentucky Speedway.
