Driving over ice is dicey business, and it can end in disaster if not done correctly. While there are whole series of shows on the History Channel dedicated to professionals who make their living taking semi trucks over ice roads, those winter thoroughfares are heavily monitored and maintained to ensure that drivers are as safe as possible.

British pop sensation Ellie Goulding, known here in the United States for hits like “Lights” and “Love Me Like You Do,” which was featured on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, was taking a well-deserved break in Norway recently, and decided to rent an all-terrain vehicle. While driving over a lake with temperatures well below freezing, the vehicle crashed through the ice. Goulding and photographer Conor McDonnell were forced to scramble up through the sunroof of the vehicle before it disappeared completely into the frosty depths.

Of course, since this happened to a photographer, there is a stunning photo of the incident to put all other Instagram photos to shame.

So me and @elliegoulding weren’t going to post about this but we decided that it’s too mad of a story not to tell. This photo is from when we were in Norway a few weeks ago – That moment when you’re in -25 in the middle of nowhere in Norway in the pitch black and your belt wagon crashes through the ice in the middle of a lake and you have to emergency evacuate through the roof. “Oh shit we’re in” was my first though. Second was to take photos. We were in the front cabin. That is pretty much under water in this photo. A few minutes later it was all completely gone under the water and ice for good

Ellie Goulding fans can breathe easy and know that the incident has taught the star a lesson about driving over ice and the value of life, but she is still able to perform. Her most recent tour to promote her new album Delirium started recently in Germany and is going strong.
