Once more, Mazda can look smug at the all-automaker picnic, because without the benefit of an electric or hybrid vehicle in its entire lineup (save for the Japan-only hybrid Mazda3), Mazda has reached the highest fuel efficiency of any mainstream automaker in the US. According to the EPA, Mazda’s fleet-wide adjusted fuel economy performance was 29.6 mpg, leading the market for model year 2015.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Mazda has achieved this, thanks to its SKYACTIV technology and design philosophy, which emphasizes removing vehicle weight, improve engine efficiency, and create a more intuitive driving experience without sacrificing the fun drive that the Zoom Zoom brand is known for.

Explosive! Be careful with those fireworks this New Year’s

Mazda North American Operations President and CEO Masahiro Moro certainly felt a touch of his brand’s pride, saying in a press release, “Mazda’s team of engineers and designers have worked diligently to create vehicles that are high-quality, stylish, fun-to-drive and fuel-efficient. Using our unique SKYACTIV Technology, Mazda has been able to achieve class-leading fuel efficiency in nearly every segment it competes in while remaining true to its core mission that Driving Matters.”

This number is set to improve, as the largest (and therefore least fuel-efficient) vehicle, the CX-9, didn’t get its SKYACTIV makeover until the 2016 model year, when its fuel efficiency rating went from 17/24 mpg city/highway to 22/28 mpg city/highway. In addition, Mazda has mentioned that its next wave of engineering improvements, helpfully titled SKYACTIV 2, will improve the brand’s fuel efficiency even more, without the need to convert vehicles to hybrids.
