General Motors has announced that one of its boardmembers, Erroll Davis Jr., will not seek re-election at this year’s Annual Meeting of Stockholders. Thus, with the recent appointment of Linda Gooden, the number of members on GM’s Board of Directors returns to 12.

“On behalf of the board, I thank Erroll for his significant contributions to GM over the past six years,” said General Motors Chairman Tim Solso. “Erroll is committed to the success of the company and has always focused on what was best for all shareholders.”

Davis, currently a director of Union Pacific Corporation, has served on the boards of a number of major corporations including Amoco, BP, PPG Industries, and Wisconsin Power & Light. He served as the President and CEO of Alliant Energy Corporation from 1998 to 2005, and also as the company’s Chairman from 2000 to 2006. From 2006 to 2011, he was the Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, and from 2011 to 2014, he filled the role of Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools.

Davis is a recipient of a number of major awards, including being named one of Black Enterprise Magazine’s “75 Most Powerful Blacks in Corporate America” in 2005, one of Fortune’s “50 Most Powerful Black Executives in America” in 2002, and U.S. Black Engineer magazine’s 1988 Black Engineer of the Year.

“GM has gone through a number of challenging structural and managerial changes, and I now firmly believe it is in the hands of wonderful and capable leadership who can take the company to new heights,” Davis said in a statement.
