Winner of the 2017 Newberry Medal, The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill is a magical story aimed at middle-grade readers that will still appeal to adults along for the ride. Every year, residents of the Protectorate take a baby and leave it in the woods to appease the witch that lives there. In reality, the witch Xan isn’t fearsome but a grandmotherly figure. One year, Xan accidentally feeds one baby moonlight, giving her magic. The story follows her as she grows up with a tiny dragon and a swamp monster and learns to preserve her home. The audiobook is narrated by Christina Moore, and with a runtime a little over nine and a half hours, it is ready for longer drives.

Hidden Figures Young Readers’ Edition by Margot Lee Shetterly

The film Hidden Figures took the world by storm in 2016, telling the stories of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, African American mathematicians and engineers that helped NASA get men into space. This is the children’s version of the biography that inspired the film, optimized for younger minds. The audiobook, narrated by Bahni Turpin, runs just a bit over four hours. If you have older children who would appreciate a more in-depth look into these lives, the standard version of Hidden Figures is also available and is almost 11 hours long.

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Really, if you’re looking for a good children’s audiobook it’s hard to go wrong with any selection by Roald Dahl. Today’s biggest celebrities, like actors Dan Stevens, Miranda Richardson, and Peter Serafinowicz, narrate several of them. The version of Matilda available now on Audible is narrated by Academy Award winner Kate Winslet, and it’s a four-hour ride through the fantastic story of the ultimate bookworm. Maybe after listening to this book, your kids will have fewer complaints about their school.
