The world of express mail is about to get a whole lot greener. FedEx Express, a branch of FedEx Corp., and Nissan announced last month that they will be teaming up to bring a bit of a green spin to the package delivery world, putting the Nissan e-NV200, an all-electric compact cargo vehicle, to work in real world conditions in Washington, D.C.

“We’re eager to work with FedEx and other companies to put the e-NV200 through its paces to continue to build awareness of the capability of electric vehicles and to evaluate how well it meets the needs of the commercial consumer,” said Erik Gottfried, Nissan director of Electric Vehicle Sales and Marketing. “We’d also like to explore clever uses of EVs in work environments where carbon emissions of gas-powered vehicles make them impractical or impossible to use.”

FedEx Express and Nissan’s test will be the first time the e-NV200 will be used in North America, proving the companies’ commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their operations. Using the electric cargo vehicle in its fleet is par tof the FedEx EarthSmart program, which is a global platform designed to help FedEx become more eco-friendly around the world.

If field tests for the Nissan e-NV200 are successful, the carmaker will begin mass production later this year in Europe.
