Fiat Chrysler Aims to Make Cleaner Diesel Engines with New Settings
Thanks to Volkswagen, diesel engines aren’t as popular as they once were in the automotive industry—but Fiat Chrysler is looking to change this. The Italian-American carmaker recently announced that it will offer new calibrations that will make its most recent diesel vehicles cleaner on the roads.
While all of Fiat Chrysler’s diesel models comply with emission regulations—without cheating on emissions testing—the automaker still wants to make its diesel powertrains even better for the environment.
Starting in April, the company will add new pollution settings to its diesel engines, along with a different filtering technology. This new filtering technology is called selective catalytic reduction and will appear on its diesel cars beginning in the second quarter of 2017.
These changes come just in time as the European Parliament is scheduled to vote today on a compromise plan for new emissions-testing rules. This vote comes on the heels of increased scrutiny of diesel models since the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal. Fiat Chrysler claims it supports the EU’s efforts, welcoming the new regulations to provide “clarity for customers and the industry.”
