Have you ever looked at an old Challenger and thought “That is awesome, but what if we dropped a modern engine in there?”

Well, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has thought the same thing, which is why the company is now offering Mopar Crate Hemi engine kits as a factory-backed option for Mopar vehicles built in 1975 or earlier.

This announcement was first made at this year’s SEMA show, where two classic vehicles—a 1971 Dodge Challenger and a 1966 Jeep Wrangler CJ66—were each outfitted with one of the crate engines. The Challenger was equipped with the 392 kit, a 6.4-liter V8 which puts out 485 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque—this engine can be paired with older Challengers, Chargers, the Plymouth Barracuda, and other makes and models up to the 1975 model year. Meanwhile, the Wrangler CJ66 was fitted with the 345 crate engine kit, a 5.7-liter Hemi that puts out 383 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque.

Both kits come with factory-spec wiring harnesses and power control modules to aid in the process of adding modern, powerful engines into classic engine bays.

The kits cost $1,795, and include (in addition to the features above) a power distribution center, accelerator pedal, O2 sensors, ground jumper, charge air temperature sensor, and instructions. A number of optional extras can also be ordered, including power steering or exhaust manifolds. The kits are intended for manual-transmission vehicles, but can be adapted for automatics.

All other accessories are available through a dealer or online at Mopar’s website.
