Vauxhall and Opel are kicking off production of the Astra Sports Tourer at Ellesmere Port, United Kingdom in style, celebrating the first model—an Elite 1.6CDTi in Flip Chip Silver—rolling off the line with a special ceremony on Tuesday.

Among those in attendance were Peter Thom, General Motors’ Vice President Global Manufacturing, and Stefan Fesser, Ellesmere Port Plant Director, as well as the team at Ellesmere Port. Vauxhall Chairman and Managing director Rory Harvey was also on hand to mark the occasion.

“This first Astra Sports Tourer marks another milestone in the great history of Vauxhall manufacturing in the North-West,” said Harvey. “The all-new Astra is of critical importance to Vauxhall and its manufacturing facility in Ellesmere Port. I’m very proud of the men and women who build this vehicle to world class levels of quality and productivity.”

Like the award-winning Astra, the Astra Sports Tourer is lighter yet more comfortable, keeping the same dimensions as the outgoing model but adding 26 millimeters of headroom for drivers and 28 millimeters of headroom for passengers. The body is as much as 20% lighter than the previous-gen Astra Sports Tourer.
