2018 Chevrolet Cavalier

The first shipment of 1,701 Mexico-bound Chevrolet Cavaliers set sail from Shanghai today, sailing towards sales in the North American market.

The Chinese-manufactured Cavalier is an example of Chevrolet’s new global design language, with a modern and dynamic exterior combined with a refined and spacious interior. The vehicle represents a merger between GM’s global resources and local expertise in design, engineering, and manufacturing from the American automaker’s joint ventures in China, SAIC-GM and Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC).

The Cavalier was first introduced to the Chinese market in September 2016, and since then, has gained a strong position in the market’s second-largest passenger vehicle segment, with sales exceeding 100,000 units in the vehicle’s native China. The Cavalier will go on sale in Mexico sometime later this year.

The Cavalier is manufactured at SAIC-GM’s new Wuhan plant, and reflects well upon the facility by showcasing top-level manufacturing quality. That high level of craftsmanship is enabled by an advanced production system with a high level of automation, which includes 3-D automated gluing and high-precision chassis assembly technology. The second phase of the Wuhan plant’s body shop involves the use of 773 world-leading Global3+ robots and 100% welding automation capability.

Another aspect of the Cavalier that is reminiscent of a more premium vehicle is the car’s impressive suite of safety features. The list of safety features includes an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, which integrates the use of 14 electronic subsystems for a high level of occupant safety. In addition, about two-thirds of the Cavalier’s body-frame-integral (BFI) structure consists of high-strength steel.
